Chang'e’s Moon Mission


嫦娥奔月













In recent years, there has been a growing interest in space colonization, the imagination often rooted in our terrestrial existence, despite ongoing technological challenges. Using mythology as a starting point to develop an interactive interface and design capable of influencing social systems is the critical point in this project. Chang'e, the first mythological figure to land on the moon (1600-1045 BC), right after, there is similar narratives in Japan and Korea. Chang'e has even influenced Eastern festivals, literature and the naming of space program. Imagining how Chang'e navigated lunar society prompts inquiry into the construction of lunar systems. However, a lunar day equal 27.23 days in the earth, due to differing planetary orbits, reshaping our perception of time and its impact on work, societal structures, and age calculation.

I perceive in humanity a symbol of natural law to reconstruct social systems. What decentralized society might emerge when time is measured not by clocks but by sleep? Nowadays, as science, technology, and societal shifts shape our daily lives, including responses to the pandemic, the supportting of liberalism is increasing, this hypothetical sleep system reflects modern realities.

In this paradigm, "sleep patterns" define the unit of a day. Opening one's eyes marks the "beginning" of a "day," while closing them during sleep signifies its the end of the day. I devised a pillow as a recording device, one time sleep will calculate as add one more unit. Its simple metrics applicable to various social measurements such as tenure, age, and health status.

When sleep disturbances, work overload, or other reasons impact a person’s sleep. The one's "age" on the pillow may appear "younger" than a more leisurely individual's. For instance, if both are deemed 30 years old by Earth's algorithm, lunar sleep variations could yield ages respectively like 982,387 times and 4,745 times. Ultimately, emphasis shifts from physical to mental age.




嫦娥奔月是在中國最古老的神話之一(商朝:公元前1600年至公元前1045年)。這是中國最早的月球神話,展示了早期人類對於在其他行星上生活的夢想,雖然他們對"宇宙和圓地球"一無所知,嫦娥在故事中從地球飛往宇宙。在這之後,日本與韓國也有類似個神話作品,彷彿是人類集體對天空都有著同樣的嚮往。

在神話中,嫦娥偷偷吃了一位女神給予的不死藥,她的身體無意識地飛到月宮。這是中華語境中眾所周知的神話。這個神話對我們的現實產生了很大的影響,包括節慶、文學電影甚至太空飛船的命名等。

從神話作為起點來開啟一個會影響社會系統的交互介面與設計是這個作品的關鍵。當嫦娥是最早登陸月球的人,她會如何建構這個社會系統與人文認知。現在的太空殖民話題已經開始,大家開始對太空上的生活有著嚮往。但是大家一般都是從我們在地球的生活基礎開始想像未來太空殖民,即便有些技術還需要突破。然而,地球上的27.32天等於月球上的一天(白天和黑夜),也就是說會有大約14天的白天。這是由於行星軌道的差異。我們不再由24小時來計算一天度過日夜,那我們的睡眠時間會是什麼樣?這個睡眠時間甚至影響著人們工作的時間、社會的體制與計算年齡的方式。於是,我試圖從人類身上找到一個自然法則的象徵,來重建一個新的社會體系。當人不再是透過計算後的時間來進行睡眠,而是透過睡眠來計算時間,這樣的睡眠機制會造成什麼樣的去中心化社會?而現實中,我們現在的日常也透過科技的發展、疫情的洗禮,支持自由主義的人也開始增加,這個非現實的睡眠系統也或許是我們現代生活的一種反映。

在這個世界觀裡,"睡眠規律"成為定義一天單位的方式。換句話說,根據不同的人,睜開眼睛是"一天"的開始,一次睡眠中閉上眼睛是"一天"的結束。我設計了一個枕頭來充當記錄的裝置,這些簡單的數字甚至可以用於各種社會性測量,如工作年資,年齡顯示和健康狀況。

舉個極端的例子,如果你有睡眠障礙,超載工作,或其他個人因素,你在月球枕頭上的"年齡"記錄可能比那個懶洋洋的人"年輕"。假設地球上的算法顯示你們兩個人都是30歲。但在月球上,根據不同的睡眠時間,他們的年齡可能不同,分別是4,745天(以地球的術語來說是12歲)。

這提醒我們,在今天談論太空殖民時除了技術,還可以關注的討論是人文問題,並試圖反映當前社會。當每個人都在思考行星的生活環境,即使有一天可能會征服技術問題,但人類的社會文化不會直接被移植過來,那他會是什麼樣貌呢?甚至也有機會可以讓地球的我們有一種思考,精簡的再定義了一個社會的樣貌與系統。
