Male Feeding

Breastfeeding has long been a profound symbol of maternal love, but men, lacking mammary glands, cannot traditionally share this physical expression of care for their child. This project explores a speculative possibility: Can a man nourish his baby with milk produced from his own body? The design proposes a device capable of producing milk from blood, enabling men to participate in breastfeeding and reimagine paternal nurturing.

Breast milk, transformed from blood, carries deep biological and emotional significance, symbolizing life, care, and family connection. Blood itself represents the core of human inheritance, a shared lineage binding family members. Breastfeeding, beyond its biological function, stands as a natural, intimate gesture of love—one that connects generations as mothers nurture their children, who may grow to continue the cycle of care.

What if fathers could equally participate in this act of care? This speculative project challenges conventional perceptions of gender roles and explores a future where men, too, can nourish their offspring directly. By expanding the biological capacity for nurturing, the project questions whether extending human life expectancy should also expand the emotional dimensions of care and love.

The proposed device sits on the father’s arm, resembling an enlarged bicep muscle, preserving the masculine form while enabling lactation. Blood is drawn from the arm through three injection needles, stored in three blood bags, and then processed through genetically cloned mammary glands. These glands transform the blood into milk, which is delivered to an artificial nipple designed to simulate the physical sensations women experience during breastfeeding.

Though seemingly “anti-natural,” the project paradoxically aligns with the core principles of human care and emotional bonding. It explores whether redefining the physical capacity to nurture could deepen familial connections, offering a speculative lens on love, legacy, and biological innovation. Through this design, the project challenges traditional biological roles while celebrating the universal human capacity to give and receive love.
