Phantom Dinning

Phantom Dining (2025) is an eXtended Reality (XR)-based participatory installation that reconfigures the act of dining as a site of transformation. Wearing VR headsets, participants move through five stages of meal preparation around physical tables and objects. The ingredients appear vividly alive yet do not truly exist. The utensils, designed for bodily engagement, invite participants to act upon themselves.

As interaction unfolds, participants gradually transform into “phantom animals” — human, yet no longer fully human. This perceptual shift generates phantom sensations that estrange the familiar act of eating. Dining becomes unstable, revealing the hidden dynamics of ingestion, power, and desire.

Within a space where reality and virtuality coexist, the boundary between eater and eaten dissolves. Life, appetite, vulnerability, and consumption become entangled. Rather than offering moral judgment, the work creates an embodied field of tension, allowing participants to inhabit the ethical and existential dilemmas embedded in contemporary practices of animal consumption.
